Background
Like other countries in the region, Bosnia and Herzegovina face the challenge of moving from a centralized political system to one that is democratic, participatory and pluralistic. There is a need for citizens, as well as public bodies, to understand democratic structures and how to participate in advocacy at local, regional and national levels. CCI now has 6 offices across BiH, which educates and trains civic groups, NGOs and citizens about the need for participation in decision-making processes, and works with the executive and legislative authorities to improve legal practices and transparency.
Mission
To support and promote active citizen participation in social processes and to strengthen citizens’ and organisations’ capacities to successfully solve problems in communities across Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Position
CCI offices are facilitators and educators that contribute to improving awareness, participation and transparency with respect to democratic structures and social processes.
Objectives
- To increase citizens’ awareness and knowledge of the transition process and newly developed democratic structures in BiH;
- To develop leadership, organisational and advocacy skills at local level to enable citizens to defend their interests and hold elected officials accountable;
- To enhance internal and external capacities of organisations for advocacy at local, regional and national levels;
- To improve cooperation between citizens and elected officials;
- To develop NGO and informal citizen group coalitions and networks;
- To help citizens better understand and participate in election processes.
